The Glasgow  Orkney and Shetland Benevolent Society

The Society is a long established Glasgow charitable organization for residents of Orkney and Shetland.

Although the need for charitable relief has changed over the years the principal aim of the Society remains, which is to raise funds for giving charitable relief for the following purposes:

  • Giving relief to the natives of Orkney and Shetland Islands, their children, or widows residing in Greater Glasgow or travelling through Glasgow and who from sickness or sudden emergency may be in need of temporary aid

  • Providing financial assistance for educational purposes to the residents of Orkney and Shetland or their children who may be studying in Glasgow

  • Any other related cause that may be deemed appropriate by the Committee.

Student Bursaries
The Society has been offering book grants to students from Orkney and Shetland studying in Glasgow, for a number of years. This has now been replaced with the offer of a bursary known as the Glasgow Orkney and Shetland Benevolent Society Bursary.

The Glasgow Orkney and Shetland Benevolent Society was established in 1837.  It is a charity registered with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (Scottish Charity No. SC006293 )
